Long weekends and leave planning 2027

Easter 2027 falls early — in late March — making spring particularly rich in days off for those who place their leave strategically. Ascension Day on a Thursday (6 May) with the bridge-day Friday is again a classic hit, and Christmas Eve 2027 on a Friday gives a lovely long Christmas break.

In 2027 Constitution Day unfortunately falls on a Saturday, so no bonus there. Pentecost is early (16–17 May), making early summer unusually holiday-rich. Use your sixth holiday week for bridge days around both Ascension and Christmas.

Frequently asked questions — long weekends

How many leave days are Danish workers entitled to per year?
Under the Danish Holiday Act (Ferieloven) all employees are entitled to 25 days of leave per year (5 weeks). Of these, 3 weeks are main leave to be placed between 1 May and 30 September. Many collective agreements grant an additional 5 holiday free days per year ("sixth holiday week"). Public employees typically have 30 days of leave total.
What’s the best bridge day in 2027?
Friday 7 May 2027 (Ascension bridge day) and the 3 days before Christmas (20–22 December) are the year’s two best. Ascension gives 1 leave day = 4 days off; Christmas gives 3 leave days = 9 days off. In total: 4 leave days can buy 13 days off in these two periods alone.
Is my leave extended if there’s a public holiday in the middle?
Yes, as a rule your leave is extended. Public holidays don’t count as leave days under the Danish Holiday Act. If you’re on leave during Ascension Week you’ve effectively used only 4 leave days.
Is 2027 better or worse than 2026 for days off?
Slightly worse. 2026 had Christmas Eve on Thursday (perfect for 9 days off with just 2 leave days), 2027 has Christmas Eve on Friday and requires 3 leave days for the same result. Constitution Day 2027 is Saturday (no bonus), 2026 was Friday. On the upside, Easter in 2027 is just as strong as in 2026 (5 free days).
How should I best use my 25 leave days in 2027?
In 2027: 3 weeks (15 days) main leave in July/August, 1 day on 7 May for the Ascension bridge day, 3 days on 20–22 December for mega Christmas, and 1 day on 14 January (optional — the accession is a flag day, not a day off). The remaining 5 days as sixth holiday week / holiday free days to be distributed as needed.
When will the 2027/28 school calendar come out?
The Ministry of Education typically publishes the coming school year’s holiday plan in March–April the year before. So the 2027/28 plan is expected in spring 2027. We’ll update this page as soon as it’s published.
